Reduce Stress This Holiday Season

2009 November 2

How do you feel when you wake to the smell of bacon frying? Bread baking? Do you like the sounds of birdsong or ocean waves? How about the scent of lavender to calm or energize your morning and provide the day’s first pick-me-up? Natural, soothing sounds can wake you gently instead of an alarm blasting you out of bed. Aromatherapy scents with flowers and herbs set up the expectation that maybe the world can be a beautiful place – even before your morning coffee.

The way you start your morning tends to color your experiences of the day. There’s no law that says your moment of waking should be stressful; don’t you get enough stress in the daytime?

If you’ve shopped for aromatherapy products before, you’ve probably noticed that most of them are lavender. It’s true that this herb has calming properties, but it isn’t the only aromatherapy choice out there, and it’s not for everyone. You can get essential oils for nearly everything, and can experiment with spice, herbs, flowers and woodsy scents to find the things you like best.

Rules of Aromatherapy Blends

The first rule of aromatherapy is to know yourself.  Scent is a highly individual thing. We all have different associations to the smell of roses, to Old Spice aftershave and to freshly baked cookies. All this is to say that the smell of sweet orange oil may make one person feel cheery and another unbearably sad. It all depends.

Aroma researchers have found that in general, men like the smell of vanilla and the smell of lavender. That’s no reason to choose either scents as a perfume though; men are also crazy about the smell of pizza! Most people love the smell of something sweet baking, and one do-it-yourself aromatherapy is to bake a loaf of bread. Other activities that have a therapeutic element include taking a bubble bath, drinking a fragrant wine, walking through a eucalyptus grove, or hanging out in a cedar sauna.

Some years ago, psychology researchers found that piping the smell of the ocean in to the air significantly helped people feel less depressed. (They weren’t sure if it was going to the beach or just the smell of the beach that worked on depression, so they tried it with just the smell, and it worked).

Ideally, aromatherapy will help you feel happier, rejuvenated, stronger and calmer. Try to avoid scents that bring back unhappy memories or that make you feel heavy and sleepy (unless you’re using aromatherapy for insomnia).

Here are some recipes to aid in relaxation this holiday season.  They can be shared with your significant other. Go ahead and indulge – you deserve it.

All-Purpose Face and Neck Massage:

3 drops violet oil + 2 drops rose oil in 20 ml of carrier oil. Add vitamin E for extra richness.

Insomniac? How to get a good night’s sleep naturally.

2009 October 29

Nearly half of all Americans suffer from insomnia. Worry, anxiety, stress, and major or minor health problems can all affect your quality of sleep. But you don’t need to take sleeping pills — which can actually make you feel more tired and groggy the next day — to help you rest easy. You can heal your insomnia using natural therapies like aromatherapy (see our recipes below), homeopathy, and herbal remedies (try drinking a soothing chamomile or linden blossom herbal tea before bed). Of course if your insomnia lasts, you’re advised to seek medical help and support.

What is sleep and why is it important? In the dark, our pineal gland secretes the hormone called melatonin, which is responsible for inducing sleep. Sleep is a building process that restores the body’s energy supplies that were depleted through the day’s activities. It is a time to replenish mental energies, emotional energies, and spiritually connect with our higher self.

But we’re not just relaxing during our sleep. In fact we are quite active. We use this precious time not just to refuel, but also to evaluate, resolve, and release many of our issues. So you can see that when you’re not getting sufficient sleep, you’re like an eight-cylinder car that’s running on four cylinders.

How much sleep do we really need? The amount of sleep each person needs varies. Most people require around eight hours each night, but various factors can affect how much more or less you might need, including your weight, age, muscle mass, exercise during the day, healthy lifestyle, and of course stress!

Aromatherapy Blends for Insomnia:

In a 10 ml bottle, pour the essential oils in the following recipes first and then add your organic vegetable oil.

Calming a Nagging Mind: Enjoy a Quiet Night

Do you feel agitated in your sleep? You subconsciously process your thoughts and emotions during your sleep, which is what makes it restless. Massage the blend below on your temples, forehead, and your nostrils (breathe it in easily) before going to bed:

7 drops Basil

6 drops Petitgrain

4 drops Roman Chamomile

Ease Worries and Nervous Tension: Gain Calm and Peace

Do you have an anxious disposition and have difficulties falling asleep? Tranquilize your mind and emotions with the following aromatherapy blend. Massage the blend on your temples, forehead, at your nostrils (breathe it in easily), before going to bed:

7 drops Lavender

7 drops Marjoram

4 drops Roman Chamomile

Other Tips to Help Your Insomnia:

  • Cut back on coffee, tea, and other sources of caffeine, especially in the evening.
  • Avoid alcoholic drinks in the late evening. Alcohol may help sleep onset, but cause early morning wakefulness.
  • Avoid eating large, late-evening meals and heavy, fatty foods before going to bed.
  • Take a walk or perform mild exercise such as yoga or Qi Gung before going to bed.
  • Don’t use your bedroom as a place to work.
  • Have a cup of warm milk before going to bed. Milk products contain an amino acid precursor that boosts serotonin in the brain.
  • Take a warm (not hot) bath (not a shower) before going to bed.
  • Avoid naps if they interfere with your normal sleep pattern.
  • If unable to fall asleep within 20-30 minutes of lying down, get up and do something else until you feel sleepy. This way your body does not associate your bed with wakefulness.
  • Exercise during the day.If you continue to suffer from insomnia or lack of sleep, seek medical advice. I can help you gain a restful sleep, peace of mind, overcome nervous tension and stress, and so much more!

Using Aromatherapy for glowing, radiant skin

Our skin endures the most damage from overexposure to the sun and the contaminants we put in our bodies like alcohol and junk foods.  To keep all your organs healthy, your skin being the largest, practice well-balanced nutrition, rehydrate with eight to 10 glasses of water per day and adding omega-3 fatty acids (found in cold-water fish like salmon, herring and tuna) to your diet promotes healthy skin.  Women notice amazing benefits, not only with their skin, but the shine and strength of their hair and nails as well. Rehydration is the key. Don’t overdo it with the alcohol and maintain well-balanced eating habits, which include not skipping meals, stop smoking, exercise regularly, get enough sleep and avoid exposure to extreme temperatures and air and water pollution.

Pregnancy also affects the facial and body skin. During pregnancy, your body changes under the effect of an intense production of hormones. Along with this, your skin also takes on a new appearance.

Facial skin may change during pregnancy and appear as what’s sometimes called the “mask of pregnancy.” This appears as small brown spots that appear on the forehead, the cheekbones, and the upper lip. They are due to a reaction of skin sensitivity to UV rays.

The mask of pregnancy does not affect all pregnant women. You can reduce your risk by protecting your face on a daily basis with a skin care product or sun care product with a high-protection filter and avoiding going outside in full sunlight. You should also wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.

Men, just like women, have to take care of their skin. While some people think a touch of grey around the temples and a few laugh lines around the eyes reflect a certain debonair charm, dull, tired-looking skin have never been known to turn women’s heads!

The suggested essential oils are readily available at health food stores.  Essential oils are not for consumption and must always be diluted in a carrier (such as Sweet Almond oil, Jojoba oil, etc. also available at health food stores) before use.  Add 2 to 3 drops of essential oil to approximately 1/8 cup of carrier oil.  Mix gently.  Keep tightly covered and use as required, preferably at bedtime.  Keep out of direct light.

Acne:  Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Lime, Patchouli, Rosemary, Tea Tree

Aging Skin:  Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Ylang-Ylang

Dry Skin:  Chamomile, Geranium, Lavender, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Ylang-Ylang

Oily Skin:  Geranium, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, Lavender, Patchouli, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Tea Tree, Ylang-Ylang

Normal/Combination Skin:  Chamomile, Geranium, Lavender, Mandarin, Neroli, Orange, Patchouli, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Ylang-Ylang

If you’re unsure about using essential oils, speak with a certified Aromatherapist who can help you make the right choice.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL VISITORS

2009 August 17

Scientists have found house-hold drugs and chemicals in rivers & lakes which are toxic to fish, wild life and people. These compounds are being flushed down drains and toilets bypassing sewage treatment plants and entering our rivers and lakes and drinking water. This phenomenon is beginning to show up across all of North America and trace amounts of estrogen, Prozac, antibiotics, dyes, pain killers and many others chemicals are being found in our water systems. And now recently personal body care product companies are also under scrutiny because they use silicone compounds in shampoos and lotions to make skin & hair soft, silky and shiny. All of these chemicals and additives are toxic and pose a danger to wild life, aquatic organisms and people! And worst of all, these chemicals and additives are entering our drinking water supplies! Although scientists say it is too early to worry and they cannot predict the long term affect, we ask why take the chance? Can we afford to wait when we can act now? Should we not think Global and act Local especially to avoid long term exposure to our children? At Infusion we believe we are all responsible for each other’s well being, a responsible person is an informed consumer!

We at Infusion Care about People and Our Environment!
At Infusion we do not add unnecessary ingredients or potentially harmful additives to our products.
